HAVANA, Cuba | Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Nunciature in Cuba, has announced the appointment of the priest of the Archdiocese of Havana, Fr. Silvano Pedroso Montalvo, son of a Baptist mother and Catholic father, as the new bishop of the Cuban Diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa, in the most East of the Island.

In a note, the president of the Conference of Cuban Bishops (COCC), Bishop Emilio Aranguren Echeverría, has announced the appointment and some information about the new bishop.

Father Silvano was born in Cárdenas, Matanzas, on April 25, 1953. As a Catholic father and Baptist mother, he was baptized in the Catholic Church at the age of 8, in 1961. After primary and secondary education, he continued his studies in University of Havana, where he graduated in Geography. From 1979 to 1982 he worked at the Institute of Physical Planning (IPF) of Las Tunas in his capacity as a geographer.

In 1987, he entered the San Carlos and San Ambrosio Seminary in Havana, where he completed the institutional cycle until he attained the Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. On January 9, 1995, he received the diaconate, being incardinated in the Archdiocese of San Cristóbal de La Habana, and was ordained a priest by Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega and Alamino, Archbishop of Havana, on June 12 of the same year in the Cathedral of the capital.

As a priest he has developed the following services:

Parish priest of San Pedro parish in Quivicán.
Pastor of the parishes of San Julián in Güines, as well as of Melena del Sur and Guara.
Diocesan Director of the Vocation Ministry
