Christians in Mexico are hard at work in promoting a referendum in the upcoming elections in 2018, Evangelical Focus reports.

A group of Mexican evangelicals targets to collect 2.5 million signatures in order for the referendum to push through. If they’re able to get enough support, the question for the referendum is: Should the state protect human life from conception as a fundamental right? Every Mexican is mandated by law to answer.

Abortion is legal in Mexico since 2007—about one million abortions have already been recorded in the country. The right to life is guaranteed, however, it is not clear when a citizen has access to this right. The Christian group wants the right to life immediately at conception.

Mexicans are not the only ones denouncing abortion laws in their country. In Germany and Switzerland, thousands of Christians joined the “March for Life” last year.

Aarón Lara, one of the coordinators of the initiative, said, they have a gigantic task to undertake. He explained that the process “is complex and extremely overwhelming, therefore it has never been possible to carry out a popular referendum like this in Mexico.”

Still, campaign organizers are optimistic that they will hold a referendum based on several surveys on the issue. Lara revealed that a Twitter survey by CNN en Español showed that 69% of respondents in Mexico City disagreed with abortion.

Mexicans are not the only ones denouncing abortion laws in their country. In Germany and Switzerland, thousands of Christians joined the “March for Life” last year. They expressed their support for pro-life policies in their countries, reports Knights Templar International.

More than 7,000 Germans attended the march in Berlin. The event was supported by different Christian organizations, including Right to Life Association and German Evangelical Alliance. There was a significant increase of supporters for last year’s rally compared to the previous ones.

Meantime, in Bern, about 1,700 Swiss Christians congregated in front of the Swiss parliament to urge government leaders to protect the life of the unborn. In between live music and prayer, Christian leaders and pro-life politicians shared messages to the rally-ists.
